The origin of the Allchin name is unclear but research indicates that the name actually originated in England, possibly from Alcuin of York, a noted cleric, who was born in AD 735 and lived and worked in France for some years. This is pure speculation of course, but until a better theory emerges, we'll stick with this one!

It has also been thought that the name came to this country during the Norman invasion of 1066 via the town of Alquines, in northern France. It is said that certain inhabitants of that town travelled with William and the invading army and, when the battle was over, settled on captured land.

These French immigrants allegedly first settled in the Mayfield area of East Sussex and then on the northern coast of the county of Kent, mainly around Dartford. This is about 60 miles north of the original invasion site at Pevensey in East Sussex. From there they apparently spread to London (where my branch of the family came from) and then north to the rest of England.

Due to illiteracy and ignorance, the original name, whatever that may have been, has mutated and modified into its present diverse forms of Allchin, Alchin, Allchorne, Allcorn etc. and has spread all over the world, particularly North America and Australia
